About Agra

Agra sits on the banks of the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh, and for much of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries it served as a seat of the Mughal Empire. That era left an extraordinary concentration of red sandstone and white marble architecture, built as statements of power, faith and grief. Modern Agra is busy, crowded and commercial, with the great monuments rising out of ordinary city streets.

The Taj Mahal, the mausoleum Shah Jahan built for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, is the reason most people come, and seeing it at sunrise is worth the early start. Across the river, Mehtab Bagh offers a quieter view of the same white dome at dusk. Agra Fort, a walled complex of palaces and audience halls, deserves an afternoon, while the delicate inlay work at the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah explains why it is often called the Baby Taj. Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra and the tiled ruin of Chini ka Rauza fill out a fuller day.

Many visitors arrive on a day trip from Delhi, but staying a night makes the early light at the Taj possible and frees time for Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's abandoned capital with its towering Buland Darwaza. Kinari Bazaar near the Jama Masjid shows the city's everyday side. The cooler months are far more comfortable for walking, and the Taj Mahal closes to general visitors on Fridays.

Best seasonOctober through March brings cooler, drier weather that makes long monument visits far more comfortable.
Ideal stayTwo days covers the Taj, Agra Fort, the riverside tombs and a half day at Fatehpur Sikri.
ArrivingMost travelers come from Delhi by express train to Agra Cantt station or by car on the Yamuna Expressway.
