About Delhi

Few cities wear their layers as openly as Delhi. Sultanate minarets, Mughal tombs and mosques, the red sandstone walls of Shah Jahan's capital and the broad avenues of Lutyens' New Delhi all sit within one sprawling metropolis, and a single day can take you from medieval ruins to glass-fronted malls.

Old Delhi, around the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid, is a dense knot of bazaars where spice sellers, silversmiths and paratha cooks have worked for generations. To the south, New Delhi was laid out as the seat of British India and is now the national capital, with India Gate, green roundabouts and leafy diplomatic districts. Beyond lie Humayun's Tomb, the Qutub Minar and the parkland tombs of Lodhi Garden.

Food is a reason to come in itself, from chaat and kebabs in the old city to North Indian thalis everywhere. The extensive Delhi Metro makes the distances manageable, and the city is the usual starting point for the Golden Triangle with Agra and Jaipur.
