About Gujranwala

Gujranwala is the fourth-largest city in Punjab, Pakistan, an industrial hub on the Grand Trunk Road north of Lahore that is famous as the birthplace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, for its food and as the City of Wrestlers. Its top sights are the Gujranwala Clock Tower, Sheranwala Bagh with the Samadhi of Maha Singh, and the haveli where Ranjit Singh was born.

The city grew in the 18th century and served as the capital of the Sukerchakia Misl from 1763 to 1799 and of the Sikh Empire until 1801, before the court moved to Lahore. That era survives in the Sheranwala Bagh Baradari, Gurdwara Partab Singh and the old town of Eminabad, linked with Guru Nanak.

Today Gujranwala is one of the busiest manufacturing centres in Pakistan. Easy trips lead north to Wazirabad, the city of cutlery, with the Tomb of Maulana Zafar Ali Khan and a Sher Shah era dak chowki, and to Khanki Barrage on the Chenab River.
