About Madurai

Few cities anywhere have been lived in, prayed in and written about for as long as Madurai. Capital of the Pandya kings and home of the ancient Tamil Sangam poets, it grew up around the twin shrines of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar, and the old city is still laid out in squares of streets around the temple walls.

Under the Nayak rulers of the 16th and 17th centuries the great gopurams, pillared halls, the palace of Thirumalai Nayak and the vast Teppakulam tank took shape. Madurai is nicknamed the city that never sleeps, and its markets, jasmine sellers and late-night food stalls, serving dishes such as kari dosai and the cooling drink jigarthanda, keep that reputation alive.

Most visitors start at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, then fan out to the palace, the Gandhi Memorial Museum and the Vishnu temples of Koodal Azhagar and Alagar Kovil. Jain rock carvings on Samanar Hills and Yanaimalai, and the new Keeladi museum of Sangam-era finds, make rewarding half-day trips.
