About Jabalpur

Jabalpur is a large city in Madhya Pradesh in central India, set on the banks of the Narmada River and famous for the gleaming Marble Rocks of Bhedaghat, where the river cuts a gorge through pure marble. Known in British times as Jubbulpore, it is also widely held to be the birthplace of the game of snooker.

At Bhedaghat, boats glide between the marble cliffs, the Narmada plunges over Dhuandhar Falls, and the circular Chausath Yogini Temple looks down from a hilltop. In the city, the Gond fort of Madan Mahal and the nearby Balancing Rock recall the age of Rani Durgavati, whose museum tells the story of her kingdom.

The Narmada is the heart of local life, from the evening aarti at Gwarighat to Tilwara Ghat, where some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed. Pisanhari Ki Madiya is an important Jain site, Kachnar City has a giant Shiva statue, and Bargi Dam and Dumna offer green escapes. October to March is the best time to visit.
