About Amravati

Amravati is a city in the Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra, India, famous for its historic Ambadevi Temple and as the gateway to the Melghat Tiger Reserve and the hill station of Chikhaldara. It is the second largest city in Vidarbha after Nagpur and the headquarters of Amravati district and Amravati division, set near the cotton-growing lands of the Purna and Wardha basins.

In the heart of the city stands the Ambadevi Temple, which is said to have given Amravati its name. To the north rise the Satpura hills, where Chikhaldara, the only hill station in Vidarbha and the only coffee-growing area in Maharashtra, looks over deep valleys, and the ruined Gawilghur Fort recalls the British assault of 1803.

Melghat, among the first tiger reserves in India, protects teak forests in Gugamal National Park and around the jungle camp at Semadoh on the Sipna River. Pilgrims visit the Jain hill shrines of Muktagiri, the old Khandeshwar Temple and Kaundanyapur on the Wardha River, while the Upper Wardha and Shahanoor dams hold wide reservoirs. October to March is the best time to visit.
