About Chittorgarh

Chittorgarh is the stage of Rajput legend. Its vast fort, spread across a long hilltop above the plains of southern Rajasthan, was the capital of the kingdom of Mewar for centuries and endured three famous sieges whose stories of courage and sacrifice are still told across India. Today it is one of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan listed by UNESCO.

The walls enclose a whole landscape of ruins: palaces of the Mewar rulers, Hindu and Jain temples, water tanks and two richly carved towers that celebrate victory and faith. Tales of Rani Padmini and the poet-saint Meera Bai, who worshipped here, give the stones an almost mythical atmosphere.

The modern town at the foot of the hill is a busy district centre with markets and simple hotels. Most visitors spend a full day exploring the fort by auto-rickshaw or on foot, stay for the evening light and sound show, and continue to Udaipur, about two hours away by road, or Bundi and Kota to the northeast.
