About Indore

Food lovers know Indore before they ever see it. The commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh turns its jewellery lane into a midnight snack market, starts the day with poha and jalebi, and has repeatedly been ranked India's cleanest city, a point of real civic pride.

The city grew under the Maratha Holkar dynasty, whose legacy still shapes the old centre. The seven-storey gateway of Rajwada faces the bazaars, the Krishnapura Chhatris line the Khan River, and Lal Bagh Palace shows how the later rulers embraced European grandeur. Ahilyabai Holkar, the celebrated 18th-century queen, is remembered across the region for her temples and good governance, including the Ganesh shrine at Khajrana.

Beyond the heritage, Indore is a lively, modern city of colleges, malls and wide roads. Day trips lead to Patalpani falls, the Ralamandal hills and the Jain pilgrimage site at Gomatgiri, while the temple city of Ujjain and the ruined fort-city of Mandu lie within reach for longer excursions.
