About Chandigarh

Chandigarh is a city and union territory in northern India, the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana at the foot of the Shivalik Hills, famous as one of India's first planned cities, designed by Le Corbusier, with the Capitol Complex, the Rock Garden of Chandigarh and Sukhna Lake as its best-known sights.

Planned after Partition in 1947 to replace Lahore as the capital of Punjab, the city was laid out in the 1950s by Le Corbusier with Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew. Its grid of numbered sectors, wide tree-lined roads and raw concrete buildings made it a landmark of modern architecture, and the Capitol Complex joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2016.

Visitors wander through Nek Chand's Rock Garden, watch the sunset at Sukhna Lake, tour the Capitol Complex and the Open Hand, and relax in the Rose Garden and Leisure Valley. The city is clean, green and easy to explore by auto-rickshaw or taxi, and it is the starting point for trips to Pinjore Gardens, Morni Hills and the hills of Himachal Pradesh.
