About Churchill

Churchill lies on the western shore of Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba, where the boreal forest gives way to tundra. With no road connection to the south, it is a small, isolated community known worldwide for its polar bears, which gather nearby each autumn as they wait for the bay to freeze. Its history spans Indigenous presence, fur trade and military use.

The Itsanitaq Museum displays a significant collection of Inuit carvings and artifacts, and the Parks Canada Visitor Centre explains local history and wildlife. An inukshuk on the shore looks out over the bay. Cape Merry, at the river mouth, and Prince of Wales Fort across the water, a stone fort built by the Hudson's Bay Company in the eighteenth century, offer glimpses of the area's colonial past. The Goose Creek Observation Tower is good for birdwatching, while the wreck of the plane known as Miss Piggy and the grounded freighter MV Ithaca are popular stops. In autumn, tundra vehicles take visitors to see polar bears, and Wapusk National Park protects important denning areas.

Trips here reward planning well ahead, since lodging and tours fill early. Summer brings beluga whale season in the river estuary, and winter nights offer northern lights. Weather is harsh much of the year, so warm gear and guided tours are essential.

Best seasonOctober and November for polar bears, July and August for belugas, February and March for auroras.
Ideal stayThree to five days, depending on the season and tours booked.
ArrivingAccess is by air from Winnipeg or on VIA Rail's train service; there is no road.
