About Spartanburg

Spartanburg is a city of about 38,000 people in the Upstate of South Carolina, near the foothills of the Blue Ridge, and the center of a county of more than 300,000. It is nicknamed the Hub City because so many railroad lines once met here, and it grew as a textile center before becoming home to a large international business community, including BMW's plant in nearby Greer.

The heart of downtown is Morgan Square, where a statue of Revolutionary War general Daniel Morgan, the hero of the nearby Battle of Cowpens, stands among restored buildings, restaurants and a clock tower. Main Street has local shops, cafes and colorful murals, including the well-known Welcome to the Hub City wall. The Chapman Cultural Center houses the city's art museum, science center, theater and ballet, and the Hub City Farmers Market runs on Saturdays.

Two colleges add historic campuses: Wofford College, with its twin-towered 1854 Main Building, and Converse University, known for its castle-like Converse Hall. Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve is a peaceful public garden, and the Mary Black Rail Trail and Cottonwood Trail give space for walking and biking. Cowpens National Battlefield, where Morgan won his famous 1781 victory, is about 20 miles away, and Croft State Park offers lakes, horse trails and hiking just south of town.

Best seasonApril to May and October for blooming gardens, fall color and comfortable walking weather.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, the colleges and gardens, plus Cowpens National Battlefield.
ArrivingGreenville-Spartanburg International Airport is about 20 minutes west; I-85 and I-26 meet near the city.
