About Lenoir

Lenoir sits in a green valley at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with Hibriten Mountain, the western end of the Brushy Mountains, rising just east of the city. It was laid out in 1841 as the seat of the new Caldwell County, incorporated in 1851 and named for General William Lenoir, a hero of the Revolutionary War battle at Kings Mountain and an early North Carolina statesman whose restored home, Fort Defiance, stands a few miles north.

In the 1900s Lenoir became one of the great furniture towns of the South, home to Broyhill, Bernhardt and other famous makers, and wholesale plant nurseries still ship trees and shrubs across the country. Downtown keeps a handsome mix of brick storefronts, a classical post office and churches, and outdoor sculptures line the streets thanks to the city's long-running Sculpture Celebration.

Lenoir is also a gateway to the mountains. U.S. Route 321 climbs north to Blowing Rock and the Blue Ridge Parkway, the wild and scenic Wilson Creek offers swimming holes and trails in northern Caldwell County, and close to town there are greenways, the Zack's Fork mountain bike trails and a golf course redesigned by Donald Ross.

Best seasonApril to June and September to early November, with fall color in the foothills in mid to late October.
Ideal stayOne day for Fort Defiance, downtown and the greenway; add a day for Wilson Creek or Blowing Rock.
ArrivingCharlotte Douglas International Airport is about 75 minutes southeast, and U.S. Routes 321 and 64 meet in the city.
