About Morganton

Morganton lies in the Catawba River valley at the foot of the Blue Ridge, and it has deep roots: chartered in 1784, it was the first town in western North Carolina, named for General Daniel Morgan, the Revolutionary War hero of the Battle of Cowpens. In 1780 the Overmountain Men gathered at nearby Quaker Meadows on their way to victory at Kings Mountain, and from 1847 to 1862 the North Carolina Supreme Court held its summer sessions in the town's courthouse.

That Old Burke County Courthouse still stands on the square, now a heritage museum, surrounded by a lively downtown of brick storefronts, restaurants and the city's municipal auditorium, which brings concerts and shows to town. Morganton is also home to the North Carolina School for the Deaf and a campus of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and its tree-lined streets are full of historic homes.

The real treat is the scenery around it. The Catawba River Greenway runs beside the river, Lake James State Park lies to the west, South Mountains State Park offers a high waterfall to the south, and the wild Linville Gorge and the Brown Mountain overlook are a short drive north.

Best seasonApril to June and September to early November; fall color in the mountains peaks in mid to late October.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown, the courthouse and the greenway; add a day or two for Lake James, South Mountains or Linville Gorge.
ArrivingAsheville Regional Airport is about an hour west and Charlotte Douglas International about 75 minutes southeast; Interstate 40 runs through the city.
