About Shelby

Shelby was chartered in 1843 as the seat of the new Cleveland County and named for Colonel Isaac Shelby, a hero of the 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain fought a few miles away. It stayed a farming town until the railroads arrived in the 1870s. In the 1920s cotton and textiles made Cleveland County the leading cotton county in North Carolina, and in the 1930s Shelby was known as the leading shopping center between Charlotte and Asheville.

The town also produced a remarkable group of political leaders in the early 1900s, known as the Shelby Dynasty, including governors O. Max Gardner and Clyde R. Hoey. Their legacy shows in the handsome homes and public buildings of the Central Shelby Historic District, the Italianate Banker's House and the domed 1907 courthouse at the center of Court Square.

Today that courthouse is the Earl Scruggs Center, honoring the banjo pioneer who grew up nearby, and the restored Don Gibson Theatre celebrates the Shelby-born songwriter of I Can't Stop Loving You. Uptown Shelby has shops and restaurants around the square, City Park keeps a historic carousel, and fall brings the Cleveland County Fair and the Livermush Expo.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October; fall brings the Cleveland County Fair and the Livermush Expo.
Ideal stayOne day covers the Earl Scruggs Center, Uptown and City Park; add an evening show at the Don Gibson Theatre.
ArrivingCharlotte Douglas International Airport is about an hour east, and U.S. Route 74 runs through the south side of the city.
