Greer is a city of about 37,000 people in the Upstate of South Carolina, set between Greenville and Spartanburg along the old railroad line that gave it its start. It grew as a cotton and textile mill town, and today it is best known as home to BMW's largest factory in the world and to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, which sits just outside the city.
Greer's historic downtown, Trade Street, is one of the most charming small-town main streets in the region. Its restored red-brick buildings hold local restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and a former bank with a curved corner front. Greer City Park, just off Trade Street, has a stage, fountains, playgrounds and a walking path, and hosts concerts, the Greer Family Fest and holiday events. The Greer Station farmers market and food trucks add to the weekend crowd.
The BMW Zentrum museum near the plant tells the story of the brand and its South Carolina factory, and visitors can tour the Performance Center. Lake Robinson and Lake Cunningham, the city's reservoirs, offer fishing and boating in quiet countryside. Greenville's Falls Park and the foothills towns of Travelers Rest and Landrum are short drives away, as are hiking trails in the Blue Ridge.
Historic Trade Street is the restored center of downtown Greer, a short brick street lined with early twentieth century storefronts that now hold restaurants, bars, coffee shops and boutiques. String lights and patios give it a relaxed feel at night. Weekend evenings are busiest; parking is free nearby.
Greer City Park is a green space next to downtown with a pond, fountains, a playground, walking paths and an amphitheater used for concerts and festivals. It is an easy walk from Trade Street. Bring a blanket for the free summer concert series, or let children enjoy the splash and play areas.
Greer Family Fest is the city's big spring festival, held in May around City Park and downtown, with live music on several stages, carnival rides, a 5K race, food vendors and arts and crafts booths. It draws large crowds from across the Upstate. Arrive early and use park and ride shuttles if available.
Greer Station Farmers Market runs in the warmer months near downtown Greer, with local farmers selling vegetables, fruit, eggs, honey, baked goods and handmade items. It has a friendly small-town atmosphere. Go on a Saturday morning and combine it with breakfast or coffee on Trade Street.
Greer Heritage Museum is a small free museum in the historic former post office on Trade Street, with exhibits on Greer's textile mills, railroad history, schools and local families. Rotating displays use photographs and donated objects. It is a quick and worthwhile stop while walking downtown.
BMW Performance Center Greer is a driving school next to BMW's huge Plant Spartanburg, offering instructor-led programs on a private track with BMW cars and SUVs. Classes cover car control, braking and off-road driving. Book well in advance, and ask about plant tours, which are offered only on certain dates.
Lake Robinson is a reservoir north of Greer that supplies city water and offers a quiet park with a fishing pier, walking trail, picnic shelters and a boat ramp for small boats. It is calm and less crowded than larger lakes. Check rules for boat motors, which are restricted on this water supply lake.
Lake Cunningham is a smaller reservoir near Greer surrounded by woods, used for fishing from banks and small boats in a peaceful setting. It is popular with local anglers for bass and bream. Facilities are simple, so bring water and snacks, and follow posted rules for this water supply lake.
Campbell's Covered Bridge is the last remaining covered bridge in South Carolina, a wooden span built in 1909 over Beaverdam Creek north of Greer. A small park around it has picnic tables, a short trail and the ruins of an old mill. It is a quiet countryside stop and a favorite spot for photographs.
Poinsett Bridge is a stone bridge built around 1820 on the old State Road, believed to be the oldest bridge in South Carolina. Its pointed Gothic arch spans Little Gap Creek in a wooded setting north of Greer. A short trail leads to small waterfalls nearby; wear good shoes for the uneven paths.
