About Albemarle

Albemarle was laid out in the 1840s as the seat of the newly formed Stanly County, in the rolling hills between the Yadkin and Rocky rivers. It took its name from George Monck, Duke of Albemarle, one of the original Lords Proprietors of Carolina. For decades it was a small courthouse town serving the surrounding farms, until railroads and textile mills arrived around 1900 and turned it into a busy manufacturing center.

Downtown Albemarle still shows that era in its brick storefronts along Main Street, its domed and columned churches and its civic buildings. The Stanly County Museum keeps local history, the Albemarle Neighborhood Theatre brings concerts downtown, and the city maintains a string of parks, including City Lake Park with its 100-acre lake and walking trail.

Albemarle's biggest draw lies just east of town, where the ancient, worn-down Uwharrie Mountains meet the Yadkin River. Morrow Mountain State Park offers summit views, hiking, boating and a natural history museum, Lake Tillery and Badin Lake are popular for fishing and paddling, and the Uwharrie National Forest stretches north with miles of trails and campsites.

Best seasonApril to June and September to early November, when the Uwharrie Mountains are green or colored with fall leaves.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown, the museum and City Lake Park; add a day at Morrow Mountain State Park and the lakes.
ArrivingCharlotte Douglas International Airport is about an hour west, and U.S. Route 52 and N.C. 24/27 meet in the city.
