About Gastonia

Gastonia grew up as a textile city, and in 1929 the strike at its giant Loray Mill drew attention from around the world and became a landmark in American labor history. Named for the North Carolina jurist William Gaston, the city is the seat of Gaston County and lies about 20 miles west of Charlotte, close enough for easy day trips in both directions.

Downtown has been changing quickly. The FUSE District added CaroMont Health Park, home of the Gastonia Ghost Peppers, along with a food hall and event space, and the restored Loray Mill now holds apartments and shops. The Schiele Museum of Natural History, with its planetarium and outdoor backcountry farm, is a favorite with families.

The landscape around Gastonia is the real draw for many visitors. Crowders Mountain State Park offers cliffs, climbing and summit views of the Charlotte skyline, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden blooms in nearby Belmont, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center sits just across the Catawba River.

Best seasonApril to June and September to November for hiking Crowders Mountain and garden visits; summer brings evening ballgames.
Ideal stayOne to two days covers the Schiele Museum, downtown and a hike up Crowders Mountain.
ArrivingCharlotte Douglas International Airport is about 20 minutes east, and Amtrak trains stop at the Gastonia station.
