About Monroe

Monroe was founded in 1843 as the seat of the newly created Union County and named for President James Monroe. It grew into a busy market town for the cotton farms of the region, and the arrival of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad brought mills, banks and handsome brick buildings to its downtown. The domed 1886 Union County Courthouse, with its red brick and white trim, still stands at the center of town.

Downtown Monroe keeps much of its historic character, with early 1900s commercial blocks, former bank buildings and local shops and restaurants along Main Street, while the surrounding neighborhoods are lined with Victorian and Classical Revival homes shaded by old trees. The city is also the birthplace of longtime U.S. Senator Jesse Helms, whose papers are kept at a center in nearby Wingate.

Today Monroe is part of the fast-growing Charlotte region, but it remains the hub of Union County. Visitors can stroll the historic districts, fish or paddle on Lake Twitty, or head south to Cane Creek Park and the Museum of the Waxhaws for a look at the area's frontier history.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October for walking the historic districts and visiting the lakes; summers are hot.
Ideal stayHalf a day to one day covers the courthouse, downtown and the historic neighborhoods; add Cane Creek Park or Waxhaw for a full day.
ArrivingCharlotte Douglas International Airport is about 45 minutes northwest, and U.S. 74 and the Monroe Expressway connect the city with Charlotte.
