About Sierra Norte

The Sierra Norte, also called the Sierra Juárez, is a mountainous region north of Oaxaca City, covered in pine-oak and cloud forests. Zapotec communities here manage their land collectively, and several have developed community-run forestry and ecotourism projects that are respected models across Mexico. Cool air, fresh streams and quiet villages define its atmosphere.

Ixtlán de Juárez, known for its sustainable forestry, has the Church of Santo Tomás Apóstol with a carved baroque interior. Capulálpam de Méndez, designated a Pueblo Mágico, has the Church of San Mateo and a Traditional Medicine Center where healers offer consultations and temazcal baths. Guelatao de Juárez is the birthplace of Benito Juárez and has a memorial to the former president. The Pueblos Mancomunados trails link small villages through forests and ridges, with cabins and local guides available for multi-day hikes. Birds and butterflies are abundant, including many species found only in these mountains.

The region suits hikers, cyclists and travelers interested in community tourism rather than conventional sightseeing. Farther afield, the Villa Alta district and the Mixe district are less visited and offer a deeper look at highland culture, though access requires more time and planning. Expect chilly nights and occasional rain even in the dry season.

Best seasonOctober through May for drier trails; the rainy summer brings lush forest but muddy paths.
Ideal stayThree to five days allows time for a multi-village hike and a stay in Capulálpam.
ArrivingBuses and colectivos leave Oaxaca City for Ixtlán and the mountain villages along Highway 175.
