About San José del Pacífico

San José del Pacífico is a small mountain village in Oaxaca's Sierra Sur, strung along the winding highway that connects Oaxaca City with the Pacific coast. Perched high on a ridge among pine and oak forest, it often sits above a sea of clouds in the morning, which gives the place its dreamy reputation. The village has long been associated with the region's mushroom traditions, a theme that shows up in local art and business names.

The village and its views are the main reason to stop: wooden cabins cling to the slopes, and mornings often bring mist pouring through the valleys below. Forest trails lead out from town into cool woodland, with guided walks available locally. Crafts shops along the main road sell woodwork, textiles and mushroom-themed souvenirs. Many visitors book a traditional steam bath at places such as Temazcal Yolitztli or Zaapeche Temazcalli. Food is simple and hearty, with spots like Teonanácatl restaurant and Comedor Monte Sinai serving regional dishes, while Tatsu and Taberna de los Duendes add other options for an evening meal or drink.

Most people treat San José as a pause on the road between the city and the beaches of Mazunte or Puerto Escondido, though some stay several days for the quiet. Nights are cold year-round, so warm layers are essential even when the coast is hot.

Best seasonOctober through April brings clearer mornings above the clouds, though nights can be near freezing.
Ideal stayOne or two nights, typically as a stop on the road to the coast.
ArrivingVans and buses on the Oaxaca City to Pochutla highway stop in the village.
