About Raleigh

Raleigh was laid out in 1792 as a purpose-built capital for North Carolina, with a central square reserved for the statehouse and streets radiating outward. Today it forms one corner of the Research Triangle along with Durham and Chapel Hill, a fast-growing region shaped by universities and technology companies. Leafy neighborhoods, old oaks and plenty of parkland give the city its nickname, the City of Oaks.

Downtown is compact enough to cover on foot. The Greek Revival North Carolina State Capitol sits at its center, flanked by the Museum of Natural Sciences and the Museum of History, both well suited to families. Fayetteville Street and Moore Square hold restaurants, bars and frequent festivals. West of downtown, the North Carolina Museum of Art pairs its galleries with a large outdoor park full of sculpture and walking trails, and Pullen Park, with its vintage carousel and small train, has been a local favorite for generations. Plant lovers head to the JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State.

Raleigh suits a relaxed, mid-paced trip built around museums, food and green space. Historic Oakwood and Mordecai Historic Park show the city's nineteenth-century houses, while Dorothea Dix Park offers wide lawns with skyline views. For a woodland break, William B. Umstead State Park lies between downtown and the airport. Spring and fall are especially pleasant.

Best seasonSpring and fall bring mild temperatures and blooming or colorful trees, avoiding the humid peak of summer.
Ideal stayTwo to three days suits downtown museums, the art museum park and a neighborhood or two.
ArrivingRaleigh-Durham International Airport is the main gateway, and Amtrak serves Raleigh Union Station downtown.
