About Thomasville

Thomasville was founded in 1852 by John Warwick Thomas, a state legislator who pushed for the North Carolina Railroad to pass through Davidson County and built the community's first store where he knew the tracks would run. The railroad arrived in 1855, the town was incorporated in 1857, and within a few decades chair factories and furniture plants had made Thomasville one of the South's busiest furniture towns.

That heritage is celebrated downtown by the Big Chair, a giant replica of a Duncan Phyfe chair that has become the city's symbol. Nearby, the restored Thomasville Railroad Passenger Depot, one of the oldest surviving depots in North Carolina, serves as a visitors center, and the downtown and Salem Street historic districts keep many of the town's early buildings.

Every fall, Thomasville hosts Everybody's Day, the oldest continuously running festival in the state, with a parade, music and food along the downtown streets. Finch Field is home to summer collegiate baseball, and High Rock Lake is a short drive southwest for boating and fishing.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October; late September brings the Everybody's Day festival.
Ideal stayHalf a day covers the Big Chair, the depot and downtown; add an evening ballgame or a day at High Rock Lake.
ArrivingPiedmont Triad International Airport is about 30 minutes north, and Interstate 85 runs along the edge of the city.
