About Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem joined two very different towns in 1913: Salem, a planned Moravian settlement founded in 1766, and Winston, a tobacco and textile boomtown that grew up around the county courthouse after 1849. R. J. Reynolds, Hanes and Wachovia all started here, and the city's old tobacco factories now hold labs, apartments and restaurants in the Innovation Quarter downtown.

The Moravian roots are still easy to see. Old Salem preserves the original town around Salem Square, with costumed interpreters, working trade shops and a bakery still turning out thin spice cookies, and the Easter sunrise service at God's Acre has been held every year since 1772. A short drive away, Reynolda House shows American art inside the Reynolds family's 1917 country home, surrounded by formal gardens and woodland trails.

Known as the City of Arts and Innovation, Winston-Salem is home to Wake Forest University and the UNC School of the Arts, and its downtown arts district fills with galleries along Trade Street. Weekend options include Dash baseball at Truist Stadium, Saturday-night racing at Bowman Gray Stadium and hiking around Salem Lake.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October; Easter brings the Moravian sunrise service, and early fall fills the fairgrounds with the Carolina Classic Fair.
