High Point grew up where the 1856 North Carolina Railroad crossed the Great Western Plank Road, at the highest point on the line between Charlotte and Goldsboro, which gave the city its name. Quaker and German settlers farmed the area before furniture factories took over in the late 1800s, and High Point still calls itself North Carolina's International City thanks to the High Point Market, the furniture industry's biggest trade show, which brings buyers from around the world each spring and fall.
Downtown is dominated by huge furniture showrooms that sit quiet for most of the year, but the city's landmarks are easy to find. The World's Largest Chest of Drawers, built in 1926, stands on Hamilton Street, the High Point Museum keeps a 1786 house and a log blacksmith shop, and the Bienenstock Furniture Library holds one of the largest collections of books on furniture and design anywhere.
High Point University's landscaped campus is worth a stroll, and Truist Point downtown hosts the High Point Rockers baseball team. On warm days, locals head to City Lake Park for boating, a historic carousel and one of the largest outdoor pools in the state, with miles of trails next door at the Piedmont Environmental Center.

A quirky building in High Point shaped like a giant 18th-century chest of drawers, with two socks hanging from a drawer, built in the 1920s and later remodeled as a symbol of the city's furniture industry. It is a quick roadside photo stop on Hamilton Street. Free to view outside.

High Point hosts the world's largest home furnishings trade show twice a year, in April and October, filling huge downtown showroom buildings like the International Home Furnishings Center. The market is for trade buyers only. Visit outside market weeks if you want to see the giant buildings quietly.
One of the largest furniture stores in the world, on the southern edge of High Point, with acres of showroom space across several buildings. It is known for its giant highboy chest outside. Shoppers come from across the country. Plan time to explore, and ask about delivery if you buy.
A free city museum covering High Point's history, including its furniture and hosiery industries, Quaker roots, the civil rights movement and local life. Outside, the Historical Park includes the Haley House and a blacksmith shop with living history days. Check opening hours, as they are limited.
A preserved 19th-century Quaker farmstead in Jamestown, next to High Point, with the 1811 house, a bank barn, a false-bottom wagon used on the Underground Railroad and historic outbuildings. Guided tours explain Quaker life and anti-slavery work. Check tour days, as it is open seasonally.
A nonprofit visual arts space in the High Point Theatre building downtown, showing rotating exhibitions by regional and North Carolina artists, with workshops and events. Entry is free. It is a good stop for local art, and you can combine it with a performance at the theater next door.
A downtown ballpark opened in 2019, home of the High Point Rockers baseball team of the Atlantic League. It hosts games, concerts and community events and is surrounded by a growing area of restaurants and a children's museum. Tickets are affordable. Check the schedule for fireworks nights.
A large city park on High Point City Lake, with a swimming pool, paddle boats, fishing, a miniature train, a carousel, picnic shelters and walking paths. It is especially popular with families in summer. Some rides and the pool are seasonal, so check opening times before you go.
A reservoir in north High Point with a marina, boat rentals, campground, tennis center, a golf course and lakeside trails. It is good for fishing, kayaking and quiet walks. Weekdays are calm. Bring a picnic, and check marina hours for rentals and any fees for boat launching.
A nature center on the shore of High Point City Lake with forest trails, a large outdoor relief map of North Carolina and environmental education programs. It connects to the Bicentennial Greenway. It is a quiet spot for a walk with children. Trails can be muddy, so wear suitable shoes.
