About Torrance

Torrance lies in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, between the Palos Verdes hills and the Pacific. It was founded in 1912 by real estate developer Jared Sidney Torrance as a planned industrial city, and its original downtown was designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers landscape firm, with Mission Revival buildings by architect Irving Gill. The city was incorporated in 1921 and grew around oil fields, steel and later aerospace and car companies.

Torrance became one of the centers of the Japanese American and Japanese business community in the United States, and for years it was home to the American headquarters of major Japanese car makers. Its many Japanese markets, ramen shops and bakeries make it a favorite food destination, alongside the large Del Amo Fashion Center, one of the biggest malls in the country.

Visitors can walk the historic Old Torrance district and the restored El Prado area, relax at Torrance Beach at the foot of the Palos Verdes bluffs, and explore the Madrona Marsh Preserve, a rare surviving wetland in the middle of the city. The Torrance Art Museum and the cultural arts center add a creative side.

Best seasonYear-round mild coastal weather; late summer and fall bring the sunniest beach days.
Ideal stayOne day for Old Torrance, the beach, Madrona Marsh and a Japanese food tour, as part of a South Bay visit.
ArrivingLos Angeles International Airport is about 20 minutes north, the Zamperini Field airport serves small planes, and Interstate 405 runs along the city.
