About Valle de Bravo

Valle de Bravo is a mountain town in the western State of Mexico, built on hillsides above a large reservoir surrounded by pine forest. Cobbled streets, whitewashed walls and tiled roofs give the center a traditional look, and it is recognized as a Pueblo Mágico. For decades it has been a weekend escape for residents of Mexico City seeking cooler air, water sports and quiet country houses.

The Embarcadero Municipal is the starting point for boat rides on the lake, and sailing and other water sports are popular when the wind picks up. In town, the Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís overlooks the Jardín Central, while the Casa de la Cultura and the Pagaza Museum add local culture. The Santuario de Santa María Ahuacatlán is known for its large wooden Christ. Short trips lead to the Velo de Novia waterfall and to El Peñón, a rock outcrop that serves as a launch point for paragliding flights.

In winter, the Piedra Herrada sanctuary lets visitors see monarch butterflies roosting in the fir forest. Craft and produce markets fill out a slow afternoon. Valle de Bravo suits couples, families and active travelers. Weekends and holidays are busy, so weekdays bring a quieter pace.

Best seasonNovember through March for dry weather and monarch butterflies; summer brings afternoon rain.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers the lake, town and a butterfly or paragliding outing.
ArrivingMost travelers drive or take a bus from Mexico City, a mountain journey of a few hours.
