About Clovis

Clovis sits at the northeastern edge of the Fresno area in California's San Joaquin Valley, where the flat farmland begins to rise toward the Sierra Nevada foothills. It is named for Clovis Cole, a local wheat farmer who allowed a railroad to cross his land in the 1890s, and it grew as a lumber and farming town before incorporating as a city in 1912.

Calling itself the Gateway to the Sierras, Clovis keeps a proud western spirit. The Clovis Rodeo has been held each spring for more than a century, and Old Town Clovis keeps historic storefronts filled with antique shops, boutiques, restaurants and a popular Friday night farmers market.

The Clovis Old Town Trail follows a former railroad line through the city, and the restored Tarpey Depot now welcomes visitors. Clovis is also a convenient base for trips to Millerton Lake, the Sierra foothills and the national parks of Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November for mild days; summers are hot and dry, and winters can be foggy.
Ideal stayOne day for Old Town, the museum and trails, or a base for Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia.
ArrivingFresno Yosemite International Airport is about 15 minutes away, and State Route 168 links the city with Fresno and the Sierra.
