About Massillon

Massillon is a city of about 32,000 people in Stark County, Ohio, on the Tuscarawas River just west of Canton. It was founded in 1826 by James Duncan along the new Ohio and Erie Canal and named for the French bishop Jean-Baptiste Massillon. The canal, then railroads, coal and steel made it a busy industrial town.

Massillon is famous across Ohio for high school football. The Washington High School Tigers have played at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium since 1939, and their rivalry with Canton McKinley is one of the oldest in the country. The Paul Brown Museum at the stadium honors the legendary coach who led the Tigers before founding the Cleveland Browns.

Downtown, the Massillon Museum shows art and local history, including a remarkable hand-carved miniature circus, and the restored Lincoln Theatre hosts films and shows. Spring Hill Historic Home tells the story of a Quaker family and the Underground Railroad, and the canal towpath and Sippo Lake Park offer easy outdoor time. The Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton is about 15 minutes away.

Best seasonLate August to November for Tigers football; May to October for trails and parks.
Ideal stayOne day, or a weekend combined with Canton.
ArrivingAkron-Canton Airport is about 25 minutes northeast; US 30 and Ohio 21 serve the city.
