Gahanna calls itself the Herb Capital of Ohio, a title the state gave it in 1972, and herbs still shape its identity, from a demonstration garden in the old town center to herb-themed festivals. The city sits on Big Walnut Creek just northeast of Columbus, next to the airport, and grew from a small 1800s mill village into a busy suburb.
The historic heart is Creekside, where a plaza, restaurants and a riverwalk line Big Walnut Creek near the 1849 village site. A restored pioneer log house stands nearby, and the Ohio Herb Education Center offers gardens, classes and a shop devoted to culinary and medicinal plants.
Nature is close at hand: Gahanna Woods State Nature Preserve protects swamp forest and seasonal pools, and the Big Walnut Trail follows the creek through a chain of parks. Downtown Columbus is about 20 minutes away.
A nonprofit center in a historic house near Creekside that celebrates Gahanna's title as Herb Capital of Ohio. Outside are themed herb gardens; inside, a shop sells herbs, teas and gifts, and classes cover cooking, crafts and growing. Garden visits are free and best from late spring to early fall.
Gahanna's revitalized old town on the banks of Big Walnut Creek, with a stepped plaza, a riverwalk, a waterfall dam and restaurants with creek-view patios. The city hosts concerts and seasonal events here. Park in the public garage and stroll the boardwalk along the water.
A 19th-century hand-hewn log house that was moved to the Creekside area and restored as a reminder of the early settlement on Big Walnut Creek. It sits beside the herb gardens and is sometimes opened for events and visitor information. Its log walls make a fitting backdrop for photos.
A 19th-century farmhouse that recalls the farming community that surrounded the village before suburban growth. Its brick and frame architecture is a rare survival among the newer subdivisions. View it from the road or the surrounding grounds, and pair it with a walk in nearby parks.
A protected woodland on the city's south side with buttonbush swamps, vernal pools and old oak and beech trees. Short loop trails and boardwalks lead through the wettest areas, where frogs and salamanders breed each spring. Wear waterproof shoes and bring insect repellent in summer.
A paved multiuse trail that follows Big Walnut Creek through Gahanna's park system, linking Creekside with wooded parks, ball fields and quiet creek overlooks. It is part of the wider Central Ohio Greenways network. Ride or walk a few miles south from Creekside for the most scenic stretch.
