Springfield is a city of about 58,000 people in west-central Ohio, between Dayton and Columbus. Founded in 1801 along the Mad River and Buck Creek, it grew on the National Road and became a manufacturing center known for farm machinery. It was once called "The Champion City" after the Champion farm machinery brand made here.
Springfield's architecture is a highlight. The Westcott House is one of Frank Lloyd Wright's finest Prairie Style homes and offers tours, and the Heritage Center of Clark County fills the grand 1890 city market building. Wittenberg University, founded in 1845, sits on a hill near downtown.
The city has many parks and trails, including Buck Creek State Park with a large reservoir, Snyder Park and the Little Miami Scenic Trail. Downtown has the Clark State Performing Arts Center and the Springfield Museum of Art, and the Springfield Antique Show and Flea Market draws collectors from across the region.
The only Prairie School house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in Ohio, built in 1908 and carefully restored with its long low roofs, art glass and reflecting pools. Guided tours show the main living spaces and the garage and pergola. Tours run several days a week; booking online in advance is recommended.
A Lutheran-founded liberal arts college from 1845 on a hilly campus north of downtown, with historic Myers Hall, Weaver Chapel and wooded ravines along Buck Creek. Visitors can walk the grounds and attend concerts or games. The campus is especially pretty in autumn when the leaves change.
A county history museum in a grand 1890 Romanesque market house and city hall downtown, with exhibits on local industry, farming machinery, Native American history and Springfield-made products. Admission is free. Allow an hour, and look up at the clock tower which is a local landmark.
An art museum in Cliff Park beside Buck Creek with a permanent collection of American paintings and works on paper, plus changing exhibitions of regional artists. It also offers classes and talks. Admission is modest, and the grounds connect to downtown walking paths along the creek.
A brick inn built in 1839 on the National Road, which served travelers heading west by stagecoach. It is now a museum furnished with period antiques, quilts and dolls, run by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Tours are given on certain weekend afternoons, so confirm hours before going.
A park on the site of the 1780 Battle of Peckuwe, fought between George Rogers Clark's forces and the Shawnee. It has a large memorial statue, the 1854 Hertzler House museum, a lake and trails. The house is open seasonally on weekends. It is a few miles west of town on Lower Valley Pike.
Springfield's main downtown theater, home to the large Kuss Auditorium and smaller halls, hosting Broadway tours, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, concerts and touring comedy. Its glass entrance faces Fountain Avenue. Check the season calendar and arrive early to find street or garage parking.
A state park around C.J. Brown Reservoir on the edge of Springfield, with a large sand swimming beach, marina, campground, cabins, fishing and trails along the dam. It is a busy summer destination for boating and swimming. In winter, trails are used for walking and the lake for ice fishing when safe.
A large city park west of downtown along Buck Creek with ponds, paddle boats in summer, a golf course and the Snyder Park Gardens and Arboretum with themed garden beds. Walking paths link to downtown trails. Visit the arboretum in spring and early summer when the plantings are at their best.
A paved rail-trail that begins in Springfield and runs south through Yellow Springs, Xenia and on toward Cincinnati, part of Ohio's huge connected trail network. It is flat and ideal for bikes. A popular half-day ride is Springfield to Yellow Springs, about 10 miles, with cafes at the end.
A monthly antiques show and flea market at the Clark County Fairgrounds, among the largest in the Midwest, with hundreds of dealers selling furniture, collectibles, vintage toys and farm items. Special extravaganza weekends draw even more vendors. Bring cash and arrive early for the best finds.
A downtown craft brewery in a renovated industrial building named after temperance activist Eliza Mother Stewart, pouring its own beers with a large beer garden, games and food trucks. It is a lively gathering spot on weekends and often hosts live music. It is family friendly during the day.
