Mansfield is a city of about 47,000 people in north-central Ohio and the seat of Richland County, roughly halfway between Columbus and Cleveland along Interstate 71. Founded in 1808, it grew into a manufacturing town set among rolling hills, and today it is best known for its movie history, its gardens and its restored downtown.
The headline sight is the Ohio State Reformatory, the castle-like former prison where The Shawshank Redemption was filmed, now open for tours and ghost hunts. Downtown, the Historic Carrousel District centers on Richland Carrousel Park and its hand-carved wooden carousel, the Renaissance Theatre stages concerts and shows, and Kingwood Center Gardens surrounds a 1926 mansion with formal gardens and a greenhouse.
The countryside is close by. Malabar Farm State Park, the working farm of author Louis Bromfield, lies just south near Lucas, the Richland B&O Trail follows an old rail line through farmland, Snow Trails offers winter skiing, and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course hosts races in nearby Lexington.
A huge 1886 prison built in a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles, closed in 1990 and famous as the filming site of The Shawshank Redemption. Self-guided and guided tours visit the cell blocks, the warden's quarters and movie sets. Evening ghost hunts are offered in season; book ahead for those.
A 47-acre public garden around the 1926 French Provincial mansion of industrialist Charles King. Stroll themed gardens, ponds with ducks and peacocks, a greenhouse and seasonal displays of tulips, roses and dahlias. Spring bloom in late April and May is the highlight; there is a small entry fee.
A downtown pavilion housing a classic wooden carousel with 52 hand-carved animals, built new in the old style and opened in 1991. Rides cost very little, and the building is open year-round, making it an easy stop with kids. Combine it with a walk around the surrounding Historic Carrousel District.
The blocks of North Main Street around the carousel, lined with restored brick storefronts, murals, cafes, antique shops and small breweries. It is the liveliest part of downtown Mansfield, with summer concerts and events. Park once and explore on foot, then continue to Central Park and the Square.
A restored 1928 movie palace on Park Avenue West, originally the Ohio Theatre, now home to the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and a busy program of concerts, Broadway-style shows and comedy. The ornate interior alone is worth seeing. Check the schedule and book tickets in advance for popular shows.
A life-size wax museum presenting scenes from the Bible and the lives of Christian figures in walk-through dioramas with narration. It also has a Last Supper display and a gallery of religious art and rare Bibles. Guided tours take about 90 minutes; it is a quirky, popular stop for families and groups.
An 1847 Gothic Revival brick house with steep gables and decorative trim, kept with many original furnishings and run by the Richland County Historical Society. It gives a good picture of a prosperous 19th-century Ohio household. Open for tours on limited days, mainly in the warmer months, so check before going.
The working farm of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield, about ten miles south of Mansfield near Lucas. Tour his 32-room Big House where Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall married, see the barns and animals, hike wooded trails and eat at the Malabar Farm Restaurant. Free to walk the grounds.
A ski and snowboard area in the hills just south of Mansfield, one of the oldest ski areas in Ohio, with lifts, night skiing, a terrain park and snow tubing. The runs are short but well groomed with snowmaking. Ideal for beginners and families; in summer the area hosts events and activities.
An 18-mile paved rail trail along the old Baltimore and Ohio line, running from Mansfield's North Lake Park through Lexington and Bellville to Butler. It passes farmland, woods and small towns, and is popular for cycling, walking and skating. Bellville makes a good halfway stop for food.
A nonprofit sanctuary that cares for injured and non-releasable birds, including hawks, owls, eagles and songbirds, set on wooded land with walking trails. Visitors can see the birds up close in outdoor aviaries and join education programs. It is free to visit, and donations support the rescue work.
A road racing circuit of about 2.3 miles in the countryside near Lexington, just southwest of Mansfield, hosting IndyCar, IMSA sports cars and AMA motorcycle racing. Spectators can roam the grassy hillsides and paddock on race weekends. Bring chairs and sun protection, and expect heavy traffic on big race days.
