About Frankfort

Tucked into a deep bend of the Kentucky River, Frankfort is one of the smallest state capitals in the country, and that makes its grand buildings and bourbon heritage easy to see on foot. It became the capital in 1792, the year Kentucky joined the Union, and its compact downtown still holds the 1830 Greek Revival Old State Capitol designed by Gideon Shryock.

Across the river, the domed Kentucky State Capitol, finished in 1910, looks over formal grounds and the giant Floral Clock. The Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History tells the state's story, Liberty Hall preserves a 1790s statesman's home, and Frankfort Cemetery holds the graves of Daniel and Rebecca Boone on a bluff above the river. The Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial uses a sundial to mark each soldier's date of loss.

Frankfort sits on the Bourbon Trail: Buffalo Trace Distillery is just north of downtown, Castle and Key occupies a restored stone castle nearby, and Rebecca Ruth Candy invented the bourbon ball here. Lexington and its horse farms are half an hour east.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October, when the capitol gardens and distillery grounds are at their best.
Ideal stayTwo days for the capitol district and two distilleries, or a day trip from Lexington or Louisville.
ArrivingI-64 passes just south of town; Lexington's Blue Grass Airport is about 35 minutes east and Louisville about an hour west.
