About Huntington

Huntington is West Virginia's second-largest city, set on the south bank of the Ohio River where the state meets Ohio and Kentucky. It was founded in 1871 by railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington as the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, and its grid of wide avenues still reflects that planned start.

Marshall University gives the city a youthful energy, and the campus Memorial Fountain honors the 75 people lost in the 1970 plane crash of the Marshall football team. The Huntington Museum of Art crowns a wooded hilltop with fine glass and art collections, and the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center is a beautifully restored 1920s movie palace.

Ritter Park's rose garden, Harris Riverfront Park and the shops of Heritage Station and Pullman Square make the downtown area pleasant to explore, while Camden Park, one of the oldest amusement parks in the country, and Heritage Farm Museum and Village bring in families.

Best seasonApril to October; late May to June for the Ritter Park roses, fall for Marshall football and foliage.
Ideal stayOne to two days for museums, parks and downtown.
ArrivingHuntington Tri-State Airport is about 15 minutes west; Amtrak's Cardinal stops at Huntington.
