Hamilton is a city of about 63,000 people on the Great Miami River in southwest Ohio, about 25 miles north of Cincinnati. It began in 1791 as Fort Hamilton, a frontier fort named after Alexander Hamilton, and grew into an industrial city of paper mills, safes and machinery in the 1800s.
Hamilton calls itself the "City of Sculpture." Hundreds of outdoor sculptures stand around town, and Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum, just outside the city, displays large works across rolling hills and woods. The Soldiers, Sailors and Pioneers Monument, topped by a bronze soldier, stands beside the river downtown.
The historic downtown has been revived with restaurants, breweries and shops along High Street, and Marcum Park hosts concerts and festivals. Historic neighborhoods such as German Village and Dayton Lane are filled with Victorian houses, and the Great Miami River Trail follows the river for biking and walking.
A large outdoor sculpture park and museum in the hills just south of Hamilton, with more than 60 monumental sculptures placed across meadows, woods and lakes, plus the Ancient Sculpture Museum. Visitors can walk, drive or rent a golf cart to tour the grounds. Allow at least two hours.
A modern riverfront park on the west bank of the Great Miami River in downtown Hamilton, with a lawn and stage for concerts, a playground, a splash area and walking paths. It hosts many summer festivals and free events. It is a short walk across the bridge from the downtown restaurants.
A long paved trail following the Great Miami River through southwest Ohio, with a well-used section through Hamilton along both riverbanks. It suits walking, running and cycling and links parks and the downtown. Access points include Marcum Park; the path is flat and easy for families.
A memorial building from 1906 at the High Street bridge in downtown Hamilton, topped by a bronze statue of a Civil War soldier nicknamed Billy Yank. Inside are exhibits on Butler County's veterans and early pioneers. It opens on limited days, but the exterior and statue can be seen anytime.
An ornate Victorian courthouse built in the 1880s in the center of downtown Hamilton, with a tall clock tower and detailed stonework. It remains the seat of Butler County's courts. Most visitors admire it from the outside while walking downtown; it is especially photogenic in the evening light.
A revitalized downtown along High Street and the Great Miami River, with restored buildings, local restaurants, breweries, bakeries, small shops and many public sculptures. Hamilton calls itself the City of Sculpture. Free events run through the summer, and street parking is easy to find on most days.
One of Hamilton's oldest residential areas, just north of downtown, with brick homes from the 1800s built by early settlers and German immigrants. It is a pleasant area for a short walk past historic houses and churches. Combine it with a visit to the Benninghofen House museum nearby.
A residential historic district east of downtown Hamilton with large Victorian homes built by the city's industrialists, many beautifully restored. The neighborhood holds an annual historic home tour and seasonal walks. Respect private property, as most homes are private residences, and admire them from the sidewalk.
A community arts center on the riverfront in downtown Hamilton with galleries showing regional artists, a performance space and classes in visual arts, music, theater and dance for all ages. Exhibits are often free to view. Check the calendar for concerts and gallery openings before you go.
An Italianate mansion from the 1860s that serves as the museum of the Butler County Historical Society, with Victorian rooms, local history exhibits and collections of clothing, toys and artifacts. Guided tours tell the stories of early Hamilton families. It opens on limited days, so check ahead.
A huge indoor sports and events complex built in a former paper mill on the Great Miami River in Hamilton, with courts, fields, a fitness center, a hotel, restaurants and a convention space. It hosts youth tournaments from across the region. Check the event schedule, as access depends on bookings.
A craft brewery in downtown Hamilton housed in the city's former municipal building, which once held the police and fire departments. The taproom pours beers brewed on site, and food trucks or snacks are often available. It has an outdoor patio near the river; check hours, as some weekdays are short.
