About Jeffersonville

Jeffersonville is a city of about 50,000 people in Clark County, Indiana, on the north bank of the Ohio River directly across from Louisville, Kentucky. Laid out in 1802 using a grid plan inspired by Thomas Jefferson, it became an important river town, and for more than a century the Howard Shipyards built steamboats here.

Today Jeffersonville is best known as the Indiana end of the Big Four Bridge, a former railroad bridge turned into a walking and cycling path across the Ohio. Big Four Station Park sits at the foot of the bridge, and the historic downtown nearby along Spring Street has restaurants, shops and Schimpff's Confectionery, a candy maker in business since 1891.

The Howard Steamboat Museum tells the story of the shipyards in the Howard family mansion, and the Vintage Fire Museum displays antique fire engines. The Ohio River Greenway links the riverfront to Clarksville and New Albany, and Louisville's attractions are just a walk across the bridge.

Best seasonApril to October for riverfront walks and outdoor concerts; the bridge is lit at night year-round.
Ideal stayOne day, or a base for visiting Louisville.
ArrivingLouisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is about 15 minutes away across the river; I-65 passes through the city.
