About Mammoth Cave National Park

Under the forested hills of south-central Kentucky runs the world's longest known network of caves, and surveyors are still adding new passages to the map. Mammoth Cave became a national park in 1941 and a World Heritage Site in 1981, and its history runs from prehistoric explorers to saltpeter miners and the enslaved guides who charted many of its passages in the 1800s.

Underground, ranger-led tours are the way in. The Historic Tour enters through the Historic Entrance and passes huge dry corridors and tight squeezes, while the Frozen Niagara and Domes and Dripstones tours show off the dripping formations found in wetter sections. Longer outings such as Grand Avenue and seasonal special tours suit those who want hours below ground. Above, trails lead past Cedar Sink, a large collapsed sinkhole, and along bluffs where River Styx Spring and Echo River Spring emerge into the Green River. Canoeing and kayaking the Green, or a short walk to the rock shelter at Sand Cave, round out a visit.

The park appeals to families, geology fans and anyone escaping summer heat, since the cave stays cool all year. Tours sell out in summer and on holidays, so reserve ahead. Nearby Cave City and Horse Cave, home to Hidden River Cave, provide lodging and roadside attractions.

Best seasonSpring and fall bring fewer crowds and pleasant hiking; the cave itself is cool regardless of season.
Ideal stayTwo days allows a couple of cave tours plus time on trails or the river.
ArrivingMost arrive by car via I-65, with Nashville and Louisville offering the nearest major airports.
