About Owensboro

Owensboro is a city of about 60,000 people on the Ohio River in western Kentucky, the seat of Daviess County and the state's fourth-largest city. It grew as a river town shipping tobacco and whiskey, and today it is known for two things above all: barbecue, especially smoked mutton, and bluegrass music.

The riverfront has been transformed with Smothers Park, its fountains and playgrounds, the RiverPark Center for the performing arts, and the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which celebrates the genre born in the nearby hills of Kentucky. The blue-painted Glover Cary Bridge spans the river into Indiana.

Every May the International Bar-B-Q Festival fills downtown with church teams cooking mutton and burgoo, and the ROMP bluegrass festival draws fans each summer. Visitors can also see the Owensboro Museum of Science and History, the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden and Panther Creek Park.

Best seasonMay for the International Bar-B-Q Festival; June for ROMP; spring and autumn for mild weather.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the riverfront, museums and barbecue.
ArrivingOwensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport has limited flights; Evansville, Indiana airport is about 45 minutes away and Nashville about two hours.
