About Edzná

Edzná is a Maya archaeological site in a broad valley of central Campeche, inland from the capital. The city was inhabited for many centuries and grew into an important regional center during the Classic period. Its builders adapted to a landscape with no rivers by creating an extensive system of canals and reservoirs, and its architecture blends several regional styles, including Puuc and Petén influences.

The site is dominated by the Great Acropolis, a vast platform crowned by the Building of Five Stories, a stepped structure combining living quarters with a temple at the top. Around it, the Puuc Patio shows the ornamented style common farther north. The Little Acropolis is among the oldest parts of the city. The Platform of the Knives takes its name from flint blades found during excavations, and the Temple of the Masks preserves stucco faces associated with the sun. A ballcourt sits between the main complexes. Beyond the core, traces of sacbeob, the raised Maya roads, and canals reveal the scale of the ancient city's planning. A small hill nearby, Cerro de la Bruja, is part of the wider site.

Edzná is quiet and spacious, suited to travelers who enjoy exploring without crowds. It is easily paired with Campeche's historic center, and morning visits help avoid the heat.

Best seasonNovember through March brings cooler weather for exploring the open plazas.
Ideal stayA half day is enough for the site, usually combined with time in Campeche.
ArrivingTravelers arrive by car, tour or colectivo from Campeche City.
