About Jhang

Jhang is a historic city in central Punjab, Pakistan, set in a farming region near the Chenab River. It is the administrative center of Jhang District and is closely linked to Punjabi literature and folklore, above all the tragic love story of Heer and Ranjha, told most famously in verse by the poet Waris Shah. Sufi traditions run deep, and shrines shape the city's spiritual and cultural life.

The tomb associated with Heer and Ranjha draws visitors who know the legend, and it remains a popular place of pilgrimage for lovers and poetry enthusiasts. Within the wider district, the shrine of Sultan Bahu, the seventeenth-century Sufi poet whose verses are widely sung, attracts large numbers of devotees, especially during his annual urs. The shrine of Shah Jeewna is another important Sufi site in the area. The Chenab riverfront offers a quieter scene, and Trimmu Barrage, near where the Jhelum joins the Chenab, is a notable landmark for those with time for an excursion.

The city's bazaars are lively and crowded, known for handmade khussa shoes and colorful paranda hair ornaments. Jhang suits travelers interested in Punjabi culture, Sufism and folk literature rather than conventional tourist sights. Winters are pleasant, while summers are extremely hot.

Best seasonNovember through February brings cool, comfortable weather; summers are very hot.
Ideal stayOne or two days covers the main shrines, bazaars and riverfront.
ArrivingTravelers usually arrive by road or rail, often via Faisalabad, which has the nearest airport.
