About Morristown

Raised concrete sidewalks running past the second-floor windows of Main Street make Morristown, Tennessee, look like no other town in the region. The city of about 30,000 people, seat of Hamblen County, sits in the green valley between Clinch Mountain and the Great Smokies, with the long arms of Cherokee Lake along its northern edge.

Davy Crockett spent part of his boyhood here, where his father ran a tavern on the old wagon road, and a reconstruction of that tavern now serves as a small museum. Morristown grew as a railroad and market town after the Civil War, and its courthouse, brick churches and the old Rose School still reflect that era.

Today visitors hike and fish at Panther Creek State Park, take pontoon boats out on Cherokee Lake, see exhibits and concerts at the Rose Center and walk the elevated SkyMart downtown. Knoxville, Gatlinburg and Great Smoky Mountains National Park are all within an easy day trip.

Best seasonApril to October for the lake and trails, with peak color in late October.
Ideal stayOne to two days, or a base for day trips to the Smokies.
ArrivingInterstate 81 passes just south of town; McGhee Tyson Airport near Knoxville is about an hour away.
