About San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo is a small city on California's Central Coast, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco and about 10 miles inland from the Pacific. It grew around Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, founded in 1772 by Father Junípero Serra as the fifth of California's missions, and the town that followed became the county seat and a hub for the ranches and farms of the surrounding valleys. A chain of ancient volcanic peaks known as the Nine Sisters rises across the landscape, giving the city its distinctive skyline.

Today San Luis Obispo, known simply as SLO, is a lively college town of around 48,000 people, home to Cal Poly. Its walkable downtown is one of the most charming in California, with creekside paths, historic brick and adobe buildings, and Higuera Street's restaurants, bookstores and boutiques. Every Thursday evening the downtown farmers market turns the street into a festival of local produce, barbecue and live music.

Visitors come for the easy mix of small-town character and outdoor fun. Mission Plaza and San Luis Obispo Creek form the heart of town, Bubblegum Alley is one of its quirkiest sights, and the famously pink Madonna Inn welcomes travelers with over-the-top themed rooms. Hikers climb Bishop Peak for views over the city, wineries line the nearby Edna Valley, and the beaches of Avila, Pismo and Morro Bay are all within a short drive.

Best seasonApril to October for sunny days, with September and October often warmest; mornings can bring coastal fog.
Ideal stayTwo days for downtown, the mission, a Bishop Peak hike and the Thursday market, with extra time for wine country and beaches.
ArrivingSan Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is just south of town, Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner and Coast Starlight stop at SLO station, and Highway 101 runs through the city.
