About Sayulita

Sayulita is a small beach town on the Riviera Nayarit, north of Puerto Vallarta, that grew from a fishing village into one of Mexico's best-known surf communities. Jungle-covered hills surround a compact grid of colorful streets, and the town has a bohemian, international mix of surfers, artists, and long-stay visitors. It was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2015.

Playa Sayulita is the center of everything, with beginner-friendly waves near the river mouth and more challenging breaks to either side, making surfing at Sayulita a rite of passage for many first-timers. Surf schools and board rentals line the sand. The plaza is a gathering place for street food, music, and evening strolls. A short walk south leads to Playa Los Muertos, a calmer cove reached past the town's hillside cemetery, decorated with flowers and color. Jungle trails connect nearby beaches and lookouts for those willing to hike in the heat.

Sayulita suits young travelers, surfers, and those who like a social, casual scene. Its popularity brings busy streets in high season, so many visitors also spend time in quieter San Pancho to the north. Punta Mita, boat tours to the Islas Marietas, and the town of Bucerías are within easy reach. Winter brings the best weather and whale season.

Best seasonNovember to April for dry weather and steady surf; whales pass offshore from about December to March.
Ideal stayThree to five days is a comfortable stay, longer for surf lessons.
ArrivingMost visitors fly into Puerto Vallarta International Airport and continue north by road.
