About Cathedral City
Cathedral City is a desert city of about 51,000 people in the Coachella Valley of Southern California, set between Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage along East Palm Canyon Drive. It takes its name from Cathedral Canyon, whose rock walls early surveyors thought looked like a cathedral, and it was incorporated as a city in 1981.
Long the quieter neighbor of Palm Springs, the city has a compact downtown arts and entertainment district with the Fountain of Life sculpture, the Mary Pickford Theatre and the CVRep Playhouse, a respected professional theater company. Desert Memorial Park, run by the regional cemetery district, is the resting place of Frank Sinatra and Sonny Bono and holds the California LGBTQ Veterans Memorial. The city is also known for its large LGBTQ community.
Families come for Big League Dreams, with its replica big-league ballparks, and for the Boomers fun park, while the new Agua Caliente Casino adds nightlife. Palm Springs, the Aerial Tramway, the Indian Canyons and the El Paseo shops in Palm Desert are all a short drive away.
