About Huasteca Potosina

The Huasteca Potosina is the tropical eastern region of San Luis Potosí, where the Sierra Madre Oriental drops into humid lowlands. Rivers here run over limestone, which tints the water a vivid turquoise in the dry months, and the forests are home to Teenek and Nahua communities whose traditions remain strong.

Waterfalls draw most visitors. At Cascada de Tamul, wooden boats are paddled upriver against the current to reach a wide cascade dropping into a canyon. The terraced Cascadas de Micos near Ciudad Valles are popular for swimming and jumping, while Cascada de Tamasopo and the cave-like pool of Puente de Dios offer gentler swims. At dawn and dusk, swarms of swifts spiral in and out of the Sótano de las Golondrinas, an enormous open pit. In Xilitla, Edward James's surreal garden of Las Pozas rises from the jungle, and the town itself is an appealing base. The Nacimiento del Río Huichihuayán, the Huastec archaeological site of Tamtoc and the hill town of Tancanhuitz de Santos round out the region.

The Huasteca suits active travelers who enjoy swimming, hiking and road trips. Distances between sites are long, and many visitors join guided tours. Rain can turn rivers brown, so the dry season is usually best.

Best seasonNovember to May, when rivers run clear and turquoise; summer rains can muddy the water.
Ideal stayFour to six days allows waterfalls, Xilitla and the Sótano de las Golondrinas.
ArrivingMost travelers arrive by road through Ciudad Valles, the region's main hub.
