About Xcalak

Xcalak is a remote fishing village near the southern tip of Mexico's Caribbean coast, close to the border with Belize. It lies at the end of a long road through mangroves and coastal scrub, and much of the area runs on limited infrastructure. That isolation is the attraction: palm-lined shores, small guesthouses and an unhurried, end-of-the-line feel that contrasts sharply with the busy Riviera Maya.

The waters offshore are protected as Xcalak Reef National Park, and the barrier reef runs close to shore. Snorkeling trips explore coral gardens both north and south of town, while divers head to the outer reef walls. Farther offshore, Banco Chinchorro, a large coral atoll, is known for its marine life and for the shipwrecks that dot its reefs, though trips depend on weather and permits. Behind the village, the shallow flats of Chetumal Bay attract fly fishers seeking bonefish, permit and tarpon. Kayaking and paddleboarding are easy along calm stretches of shore, and the coastal road toward Mahahual passes isolated beaches. Boat crossings toward Belize's cayes, such as Caye Caulker, are sometimes arranged, though entry formalities need checking in advance.

Xcalak suits divers, anglers and travelers comfortable with simple facilities and few services. Bringing cash and supplies is wise, and summer and fall carry hurricane risk.

Best seasonThe drier months from roughly December to April bring calmer seas and better visibility for diving.
Ideal stayFour to seven days allows several dives or fishing days at a relaxed pace.
ArrivingTravelers drive via Mahahual, typically starting from Chetumal or Bacalar; Chetumal has the nearest airport.
