About Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy is a small, protected island north of Isla Mujeres, managed as a national park dedicated to seabird conservation. Visitor numbers are strictly limited each day, there is no lodging, and access is only through authorized tour operators. The result is one of the least disturbed stretches of coast in the Mexican Caribbean.

Tours land at a modest pier near the beach, where visitors can swim and relax in clear water. A small nature museum explains the island's ecology, and short trails, sometimes with an observation tower, allow bird watching across the lagoons. Brown pelicans, frigatebirds, cormorants and ospreys are among the species that nest or roost here in large numbers. Mangroves and dunes create important habitat, and sea turtles use the island's beaches for nesting. Most trips include a snorkeling stop at a reef along the way, often Ixlache, before arriving. The boat ride itself, through open water with possible dolphin sightings, is part of the appeal.

Contoy suits nature lovers and families looking for a calm, educational day out. Visitors must follow park rules, including staying on paths and limiting time ashore. Many tours return via Isla Mujeres, sometimes stopping in the town, and Hacienda Mundaca, a historic estate on Isla Mujeres, makes a related stop.

Best seasonNovember through April usually brings calmer seas and pleasant weather for the boat crossing.
Ideal stayPlan for one full-day tour, which includes snorkeling, beach time and a guided walk.
ArrivingAuthorized tours depart from Cancún or Isla Mujeres; independent visits are not permitted.
