About Cozumel

Cozumel is Mexico's largest Caribbean island, lying off the coast opposite Playa del Carmen. In Maya times it was a pilgrimage center dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, and today it is one of the world's best-known diving destinations, as well as a major cruise ship port, with a mostly undeveloped interior of low forest.

San Miguel de Cozumel, the only town, faces the mainland with a waterfront promenade, shops and a central plaza. Underwater, the walls and coral formations of Palancar Reef and other sites within Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park are renowned for clear water and gentle drift dives. West coast snorkeling is excellent even from shore, with reef fish and turtles close in. Between spring and late summer, turtle nesting season brings activity to protected beaches. On land, San Gervasio preserves the remains of the island's main Maya site, and the village of El Cedral holds a small church and a traditional festival. Punta Sur Ecological Park, at the southern tip, combines a lighthouse, lagoons with crocodiles, a beach and El Caracol, a small Maya structure. The wild east coast has rugged surf, beach bars and few buildings.

Divers, snorkelers and cruise passengers make up most visitors. Renting a scooter or car makes it easy to circle the island in a day.

Best seasonDecember through April is drier, with calm seas and good underwater visibility.
Ideal stayFour to five days suits divers; two or three days is enough for a snorkeling stay.
ArrivingCozumel International Airport receives direct flights, and frequent ferries cross from Playa del Carmen.
