West Allis is a city of about 60,000 people in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, directly west of Milwaukee. It grew around the Edward P. Allis Company's large machinery works, built here in 1902, and became one of the region's great industrial suburbs, with tidy working-class neighborhoods of bungalows and duplexes.
West Allis is best known as the home of Wisconsin State Fair Park. Each August the Wisconsin State Fair draws huge crowds for its cream puffs, livestock barns, rides and concerts, and the grounds also hold the Milwaukee Mile, the oldest operating motor speedway in the world, and the Pettit National Ice Center, a training home for American speedskaters with public skating sessions.
The West Allis Farmers Market has operated since 1919, and Greenfield Park offers a lagoon, golf and walking paths. Historic districts such as Kopperud Park show off the city's early 20th-century homes. Downtown Milwaukee, the Harley-Davidson Museum and the lakefront are about 15 minutes away.
An 11-day summer fair at State Fair Park each August, famous for its giant cream puffs, livestock barns, a big midway, food on a stick and concerts at the main stage. It is one of the largest fairs in the Midwest. Buy tickets online for discounts, wear comfortable shoes and arrive early on weekends.
A one-mile oval at State Fair Park that first held races in 1903, making it the oldest operating motor speedway in the world. It has hosted IndyCar, NASCAR and many other series over the decades. Race schedules vary from year to year, so check before visiting; the grandstand offers good views.
