About Blacksburg

Blacksburg wears Hokie maroon and orange with pride. Virginia's largest town grew from a 1798 grid of sixteen blocks into the home of Virginia Tech, whose gray Hokie Stone buildings ring the vast lawn of the Drillfield and whose 66,000-seat Lane Stadium shakes on fall Saturdays.

Beyond football, the university gives this New River Valley town a surprisingly rich cultural life. The Moss Arts Center brings touring performers to Main Street, the Hahn Horticulture Garden and the Duck Pond offer quiet corners on campus, and the Museum of Geosciences shows off minerals and fossils. History runs deeper at Historic Smithfield, a frontier plantation home from the 1770s, and at the Alexander Black House downtown.

The Blue Ridge and Appalachian ridges are close by. The paved Huckleberry Trail rolls toward Christiansburg, Pandapas Pond sits in the Jefferson National Forest just north of town, and the Cascades waterfall and the New River are easy half-day trips.

Best seasonSeptember to November for football and fall color; April and May for mild spring days.
Ideal stayTwo days for campus, downtown and a nearby hike.
ArrivingRoanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport is about 45 minutes away; I-81 passes near Christiansburg.
