Valencia is a planned community in the Santa Clarita Valley of northern Los Angeles County, about 30 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. It was developed from the 1960s on land of the historic Newhall Ranch, and today it is part of the city of Santa Clarita, known for tree-lined neighborhoods, a network of paseos for walking and cycling, and easy access to the mountains.
The best-known attraction is Six Flags Magic Mountain, one of the world's largest collections of roller coasters, along with the Hurricane Harbor water park next door. Valencia Town Center and the walkable streets around it hold shops, restaurants and a weekly farmers market, and the California Institute of the Arts, founded with support from Walt Disney, has its campus in the community.
The surrounding hills offer room to explore. Bridgeport Park has a small lake with paths, Central Park hosts sports and community events, and the Santa Clarita Valley's trails and open spaces lead into the foothills of the Angeles National Forest.
Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia is famous for having one of the largest collections of roller coasters in the world, including tall, fast and record-setting rides such as Twisted Colossus, X2 and Tatsu. It also has family rides and shows. Go on a weekday, buy tickets online, and consider a line-skipping pass.
Hurricane Harbor Los Angeles is the water park next to Six Flags Magic Mountain, with tall water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river and splash areas for small children. It is open in the warm season, mostly late spring to early fall. Arrive at opening to claim a shaded spot, and wear water shoes on hot pavement.
Westfield Valencia Town Center is the main shopping mall of the Santa Clarita Valley, with department stores, many national retailers, restaurants and a movie theater. An outdoor street of restaurants and shops runs beside it. Weekends are busy; weekday afternoons are calmer, and parking is free.
The Cube is a large ice rink complex in Valencia with several rinks used for public skating, youth and adult hockey, figure skating and lessons. It also has a cafe and party areas. Public skating sessions have set times that change through the week, so check the schedule online before you go and rent skates on site.
The California Institute of the Arts, known as CalArts, is a well-known arts college in Valencia founded with support from Walt Disney. Many animators, filmmakers and musicians studied here. The campus hosts student performances, exhibitions and film screenings, some open to the public; check the events calendar.
The Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons in Valencia is the main theater of the Santa Clarita Valley, hosting touring musicians, dance companies, comedy, family shows and student productions. The hall is modern and comfortable. Check the season schedule online; parking on campus is easy for evening shows.
Bridgeport Park is a pleasant neighborhood park in Valencia set around a small lake with ducks, a walking path, a playground and lawns for picnics. It links to Valencia's paseo trail network, so you can walk or bike from here to other parks. It is a relaxing spot for an evening stroll; weekends are busiest.
The Valencia Paseos are a network of paved paths with pedestrian bridges and underpasses that let people walk and bike across Valencia's neighborhoods without crossing busy streets. They connect parks, schools and shopping. Pick up the paths near Bridgeport Park or the town center and explore on foot or by bike.
The Santa Clara River Trail is a paved multi-use path that follows the Santa Clara River and its tributaries through Valencia and the rest of Santa Clarita. It is flat and good for long walks, runs and bike rides, with views of the hills and open riverbed. Several trailheads have parking; bring water in summer.
The Santa Clarita Certified Farmers Market sets up on Sunday mornings in a parking lot at College of the Canyons in Valencia, with farm fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, prepared foods and local vendors. It is a popular weekly gathering for valley residents. Come early for the best selection and cooler temperatures.
